HISTORY OF BEAVER LODGE No 885 G.C
On 11th December 1956, a club known as the “Five Points Club” was formed among Canadian troops stationed in Germany “for the purpose of furthering Masonic fellowship among the Masons serving in Germany”. At a meeting of the Club on 11th June 1962, it was agreed to apply for permission to form a Lodge within the British Lodge Group in Germany, and Officers were elected. The Club closed and transferred all its assets to the proposed new Lodge.
The brethren rehearsed and prepared for the consecration of their Lodge – to be named Beaver Lodge – under the supervision of RWBro R.GH Holmes, Grand Lodge Inspector for the British Lodge Group.
On the 16th of March 1963 the Lodge was consecrated by MWBro R Müller-Börner, Grand Master of the Grand Land Lodge AF&AM at the Logenhaus Soest. At this meeting RWBro J.P Railton was obligated by the Grand Master as Provincial Grand Master of the new Province of British Freemasons in Germany. The Lodge remained in Soest for 20 years.
Membership of the Lodge was mainly Canadian, but not exclusively so. Membership on 1st January 1970 was 97 members, but the future of the Lodge was uncertain as the Canadian troops began to leave Germany.
The Lodge moved to the Park Hotel in Werl 1983 and was sanctified by The Grand Master RWBro A Settle. Because of the nature of the premises there rose a conflict of a business nature and the Lodge was forced to move yet again in 1999 to the Stadthalle Werl.
Negotiations took place at the beginning of 2004 with the Master of the Zur Bundeskette Lodge in Soest and an agreement was reached which enabled Beaver Lodge to return to the Logenhaus, Soest. The first meeting took place on the 19th of November 2004.
After some internal turmoil the Lodge is now thriving, the membership growing, the brethren happily going about their Masonic duties.
We have in our midst an Australian, Italian, English, Scottish, German, Canadian, American nationals, a truly international mixture of which we are proud of and continue to encourage
